I am SO excited to be sharing with you all that this July 4th-28th I will be serving with and photographing for Family Legacy‘s Camp Life in Zambia! A little over 10 years ago, when I first discovered my “knack” for photography, I remember thinking that if I could do ANYTHING with my life, it would be to use my gift and talent of photography to take photographs that make a difference — specifically humanitarian photography focused on orphan care. Now, here I am today telling you IT’S HAPPENING! In this post I’ll share about how I received this opportunity, a little about Family Legacy and their mission, what I will be doing, and how YOU can help! So, here we go…
About Family Legacy + Zambia
Family Legacy was founded in 2003 to serve the vulnerable and abandoned children of Lusaka, Zambia. Due to HIV/AIDS and poverty, nearly HALF of the entire country’s population is under the age of 14. Family Legacy now operates 24 schools throughout the country, serving almost 15,000 orphaned and vulnerable children, more than 700 of which live in full-time care at their Tree of Life Children’s Village.
Because of this organization’s work focused specifically and strategically JUST in Zambia, the future of this entire country is changing! Children are cared for, educated, loved, taught about the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and will use this foundation to grow into strong, capable leaders for their families, community and nation.
The Opportunity
I have known about Family Legacy for a while now and LOVE their mission. I have 4 different circles in my life that all overlap with this organization, so I’ve been following along with their work for the past few years. A few months ago, a past bride of mine contacted me saying that they had found someone to help sponsor me to attend and serve at Camp Life this upcoming summer! She and her husband had chosen to serve at Camp Life in place of their Honeymoon and remembered a past conversation when I told her about my connections to Family Legacy and how I’d love to be able to go serve one day! This incredibly generous gift + a connection with a staff member from my college summer camp days, led to me participating both as a volunteer and photographer this upcoming summer!
Camp Life + What I Will Be Doing
Each summer, Family Legacy hosts 7 weeks of Camp Life for orphaned and vulnerable Zambian children. Volunteers are partnered with Zambian Team members to lead groups of 10 children through camp activities throughout the week. The trip cost for each volunteer covers the sponsorships for these 10 children to attend! I will be participating as a volunteer Week 5 to lead a group of these sweet kiddos, and then I will be staying for an additional two weeks to photograph Weeks 6 + 7! Here’s a little clip of a video from the Camp Life page of Family Legacy’s website so you can see where I’ll be and get an idea of what my trip will look like:
How You Can Help!
I have worked SO HARD to get to a point in my life and business where I CAN take the time off to donate my gift of photography in this way, and your support of Family Legacy and their mission through me would mean the world! I am currently fundraising for my remaining trip costs – click the link below to donate: https://www.gofundme.com/angie039s-zambia-trip
