Tal is a senior at Westlake High School, and I photographed her sunflower field session during peak season. As a Westlake High School senior photographer, my approach centers on natural posing and a calm, comfortable session experience.

Rather than building the session around a long shot list, we planned Tal’s sunflower senior photos to feel unforced and natural. Focusing on movement, light, and small in-between moments allows candid images and expressions to unfold naturally.

A Seasonal Setting Near Thousand Oaks

We spent the late evening capturing Tal’s senior photos at Conejo Family Farms, in their seasonal sunflower field located a short drive from Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks. Sunflower fields are only available for a brief window each year, which makes it a fun seasonal location portraits! This year the sunflowers were in bloom throughout part of September and October. 

The open paths, surrounding greenery, and distant hills were so pretty light softened toward sunset!

Thoughtful Details

Tal brought a denim patchwork tote bag her mom made for her to incorporate into her senior pictures. Personal elements like this are a simple and genuine way to add depth and personality to your senior pictures!

Sunflower fields are visually rich, with tall stalks, broad leaves, and bright golden blooms. Because the setting is already bold, clothing works best when it’s simple, balanced, and thoughtfully chosen.

A few guidelines that photograph especially well in sunflower fields:

• Soft whites and creams complement the yellow blooms without overpowering them
• Denim adds structure and creates an elevated but relaxed feel
• Avoid bold patterns or neon tones, which can compete with the natural setting and feel visually busy
• Choose shoes that are comfortable for walking. Paths are often uneven, so it’s best to avoid high heels or anything difficult to move in!

If you’re thinking of a white dress or top like Tal’s outfit, I recommend considering pieces with subtle texture or detail. An eyelet pattern, lace, soft ruffles, or layered fabrics add interest without distracting from the setting.
